Having nice bright white teeth is becoming increasingly important in this ever image aware society. People associate white teeth with youth, health and success and those of us who are unlucky enough not to have such teeth may feel disadvantaged. Tooth whitening often refers to the bleaching process used by dentist but if taken at its most basic means anything that can whiten teeth. Critical to the whitening process is knowing how to brush your teeth. Your dentist will be reluctant to proceed with treatment unless your teeth and gums are healthy and you.

Internal stains - caused by naturally dark teeth, staining caused by medication when the teeth were formed, dying teeth amongst other things.
External stains - surface stains from foods and drinks, build up of bacteria deposits amongst other things.
Your dentist will also take into account discolourations that sometimes do not fall nicely into either of these categories such as decaying teeth, leaking fillings, discolouration caused by silver fillings and incorrectly coloured white fillings.

Quality electric toothbrushes such as the Sonicare Elite and Sonicare Flexcare claim that you can see whiter teeth when you use their brushes for 30 days. Surface stains can be removed fom teeth using these brushes and tests that we have conducted ourselves indicate that this is the case. The brushheads do have to be changed as recommended to have a continuing effect.
Tooth whitening toothpastes have been shown to work and you will be aware of the adverts on television showing dramatic results. As yet I have not ever heard of anyone having dramatic whitening results which they would not have had by using a regualar toothpaste.

Dentist supplied whitening gel is a very successful procedure that is conducted by your dentists. Not every patient is suitable for this procedure but your dentist will advise you of this. Crowns and other restorative materials that have been placed in your teeth will not bleach and often these will have to be replaced after the desired final tooth colour has been achieved. |
Some dentists are now offering Zoom 2 as seen on makeover television. Zoom 2 incorporates intense light and the zoom bleaching agent to produce dramatic shade reductions. See the advert in our online shop regarding bleaching your teeth in Edinburgh.
Non - dentist supplied whitening gels and paste are not recommended at all and we cannot advocate their use. By all means research these products but seek advice from your dentist.
Bleached teeth will go darker with time and this will be dependent on your lifestyle. Avoiding dark coloured foods and drinks such as black tea and red wine will help to prolong the whitening effect. Remember to ask about repeat bleaching and the costings for this.
